Science Park Amsterdam is already establishing a reputation as the home of a number of important knowledge-based institutions. These include the Faculty of Science of the Universiteit van Amsterdam and internationally renowned research institutes like the National Institute for Nuclear Physics and High Energy Physics (NIKHEF), the Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOLF) and the National Research Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI), as well as SARA Computing and Networking Services. The park also houses more than 80 innovative companies.
To further strengthen their position on the international market, the City of Amsterdam has invited Paladin Studios to create a virtual scale model of the science park. Together with the project managers of Amsterdam, Paladin has gathered information on the park, including it’s future plans. From the piles of CAD data, aerial images and photographs of the site, a virtual environment has been created that represents the science park of the future.
The application has been well received, and is currently used as marketing tool. Shots of the “screensaver mode” have been used as a typical 3D animation, which is used on the website and was featured on local television.
In addition to the marketing purpose, the application serves as a discussion platform for the architects and urban designers involved in the project. The complete integration of the broad spectrum of designs is an excellent way to view architectural designs in their context. This stimulates cooperation and coherence throughout the science park.
